The game's story is a unique, darker twist on. Like the vast majority of games that attempt to replicate the settings and styles perpetuated by FromSoftware, it's a little rough around the edges – lacking that finesse and flourish that sets the Soulslikes that come from the source apart from the rest. Lies of P is a challenging action game with a unique 'lie' system where what you do & say as the main character dynamically affects gameplay. Its Bloodborne set in the 19th century and you play as Pinocchio for some reason. I don't know if it's the dark Belle Époque aesthetics or the way that the camera lingers loosely behind Pinocchio as he pirouettes around, and pierces through, all manner of mechanized monstrosities, but I was hooked immediately. The game is a third-person action horror game where you slice lanky lads and shoot a gun from your left hand. Lies of P caught my attention not because of its attempt to make me empathize with the struggles of a mischievous marionette who just wants to be a real boy, but because of its staggering presentation. Inspired by the familiar story of Pinocchio, Lies of P is an action souls-like game set in a cruel, dark Belle Époque world. There are echoes of American McGee's influence here, the divisive designer who quite infamously brought twisted subversions of the Lewis Carroll novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass to life with EA's backing in the aughts. Lies of P will be launching on Xbox Game Pass on day one when it releases in August 2023.
The game looks and moves like a younger sibling of Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3, with the sort of measured pace that requires. If you’re a souls-like fan with a Game Pass sub, keep an eye out for this one. Whatever the origin story, Lies of P is 100 committed to the bit. Lies of P is set to release in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5.
